Glen Park Yardies - Information

Roots:

Term/Meaning: Yardie (or Yawdie) is a term stemming from the slang name originally given to occupants of "government yards", social housing projects with very basic amenities, in Trenchtown, a neighborhood in West Kingston, Jamaica. Trenchtown was originally built as a housing project following devastation caused by Hurricane Charlie. Each development was built around a central courtyard with communal cooking facilities. Poverty, crime, and gang violence became endemic in the neighborhood, leading the occupants of Trenchtown to be in part stigmatized by the term "Yardie".

History/Roots: During the 1950's - 1980's, the British Government encouraged immigration to the country to fill existing job vacancies. Within the Caribbean community, new arrivals from Jamaica were sometimes referred to as "Yardies" due to their perceived lower financial status, though the term could also be applied with nostalgic affection. In the following years, gang violence or behaviour on the part of Jamaicans became known in wider British society as "Yardie culture" and the participants "Yardies". The terms "Yardie gang" or "Yardie gun violence" were largely used by the British media to described violent crimes in London's black community. The gangs in London are specifically known to have occupied and operated in their infamous grounds of Brixton, Harlesden, Stonebridge, Hackney and Tottenham.

The Jamaicans/Yardies inhabiting Britain at the time had not accomplished their goals of having a good life-style and high income jobs like they were promised, so they decided to follow more illegal ways of accomplishing better life-styles, so they resorted importing Marijuana from Jamaica and also armed robberies. At the time Yardie gangs were notorious known for their involvement in gun crime and the illegal drug trade, notably marijuana and crack cocaine in the United Kingdom.

Destination, Los Santos:

Late 1980's - Early 1990's: During this time the towns and streets of London and other large towns in the United Kingdom had become over packed/ran by the Afro-Caribbean & other black communities. Kingpins of different Yardies sets, one being Ajay "Rocce" Kevaughn got together and united the different gangs/sets as one to increase their numbers. The main three kingpins were impressed by the increase of members, money, imports and weapons and decided that 'The Yardies' would migrate to an larger country with an higher population of black people, so they could make more profit from their imports such as drugs and weaponry.'The Yardies' slowly but successfully migrated to the USA. The three kingpins could not come to an agreement of who would be the main kingpin and decided to follow different paths. 'The Yardies' split up into free sets which would go to different states in the USA. The biggest set moved to Liberty City and named themselves 'The Uptown Yardies', they later on became the most successful group who made most of their fortune through illegal arms Dealerships. Another set would take over the streets of Miami, Florida and became the second most successful and made most of their profit from crack cocaine & marijuana sales. The third set took Los Santos and were the least successful, due to the inhabitance of African-American gangs at an all time high, this set couldn't make much money due to the African-American gang, naming themselves 'The Ballas', who were the lead Drugs & Arms dealers in Los Santos at the time, the gang also had many different sets and territories leaving 'The Yardies' un-successful and homeless for a short period of time...

Later: Yardies made a lot of money through selling and purchasing drugs, robberies and rackeetering near Glen Park and around the Downtown Los Santos area, being as these areas were not over-populated and controlled by gang members, Yardies were at high numbers during this time and took the spot of the second most successful Yardies set, the members began moving into the Glen Park area, this caused an confrontation with the notorious ballas set, the 'Kilo Tray Ballas'. After many months of war the Yardies took over the Glen Park area, at the same time in the Vinewood area an notorious gang from Liberty City had taken over the whole Temple area, they named themselves 'The Red Jacks'. These events caused 'The Ballas' to unite the create one set, named 'The United Balla Nation' or simply 'The Ballas', this also led to the gang known as 'The Families' uniting to re-create 'The Orange Grove Families'. The Yardies had lost many members through the violance and war with 'The Kilo Tray Ballas', but had made an name for themselves around Los Santos, following the other sets of Yardies they changed their set name to 'The Glen Park Yardies', and opened both legal and illegal businesses.
